Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service

Blackwater

Blackwater is a coal mining community, 200 km west of Rockhampton and 75 km east of Emerald. The population is around 4,700 but with a high number of drive in drive out (DIDO) workers, it can get up to 12,000. There’s a significant First Nations population that lives and travels between Blackwater and Woorabinda. Read more about life in Blackwater.

The health services in Blackwater include a 24 hour emergency department with 6 treatment spaces and a triage room. There’s an inpatient ward, 6 residential aged care beds, medical imaging services, outpatient services, dental services, and additional consultation rooms.

Emerald

Emerald has a population of 14,000 people. It has a diverse economy, including agriculture, mining, and renewable energy. Emerald has a relatively young and mobile population, with families flocking to the area for employment opportunities. Read more about life in Emerald.

Emerald’s health care includes occupational injuries and traumas, as well as progression of chronic illnesses. It has a busy maternity service, with over 300 births a year. You’ll experience a range of age groups and presentations to fulfil all your training requirements.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service

The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service offers positions in:

  • Dalby
  • Killarney
  • Kingaroy and Murgon
  • Warwick.

Dalby

Dalby is 200 km from Brisbane, at the crossroads to Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Roma, Mundubbera, and Goondiwindi. It has a population of around 13,000 in the town, and another 5,000 in the western rural district. It’s at the centre of rich coal and natural gas reserves which underpin the power generation industry for South East Queensland. Read more about life in Dalby.

Health services in Dalby include medical, surgical, maternity, paediatrics, accident and emergency and specialist outpatient services. There’s also pathology, medical imaging, pharmacy, allied health, mental health, palliative care, aged care, haemodialysis, and an infusion clinic. A residential aged care facility with 80 high care nursing beds is co-located with the hospital. There’s a busy non-specialist birthing service, with around 270 births a year. Visiting medical officers provide general surgery and gynaecological specialists, with planned procedures running 2 days a week and emergency caesarean 24 hours a day.

Kingaroy and Murgon

Kingaroy and the South Burnett region is located approximately 3 hours’ drive from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The population of Kingaroy is around 11,000 and just over 2,200 in Murgon. Read more about life in Kingaroy and Murgon.

The hospital in Kingaroy is a hub site for the other South Burnett hospitals including Nanango, Wondai, Cherbourg, and Murgon. It’s mainly staffed by rural generalists, with support from local and visiting specialists. There is level 3 emergency care, inpatients, renal dialysis, medical imaging, pathology and maternity care. The anaesthetics service is provided by GP anaesthetists 24 hours a day. There are visiting outpatient services for gynaecology, cardiology, psychiatry, paediatrics, general surgery, urology, and flying specialist service (FSS). There are also outreach services available.

St George

St George is a thriving rural town, situated on the Balonne River and is a major agricultural region. It has a population of just over 3,000 people. Read more about life in St George.

St George has acute medical and emergency services, outpatients, surgical, x-ray, pharmacy, wound management, telehealth, and palliative care. There are also maternity, antenatal, postnatal, and birthing services. There’s a wide range of primary and community care (PCC) services covering both St George and the surrounding areas.

The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service offers positions in Maleny.

Maleny

Maleny is a unique rural community located high above the Sunshine Coast with beautiful views of the Glasshouse Mountains. Maleny has a population of approximately 4,000 people and is located 100km north of Brisbane. Read more about life in Maleny.

The hospital in Maleny is led by rural GPs and rural generalists with support from visiting specialists. Services include emergency, medical, subacute, palliative care and outpatients.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service

Charters Towers

Charters Towers is located 134km west of Townsville. It’s the gateway to the western corridor of Queensland and has a large farming community in its surrounding areas. Read more about life in Charters Towers.

Health services in Charters Towers include accident and emergency care, general in-patient medical, surgical, obstetric, and paediatric services. Although the hospital isn’t a birthing facility, pregnancy care closer to home is a key part of the hospital team. Allied health support includes social work, radiography, oral health, pharmacy and physiotherapy, and indigenous health workers all on site at the hospital.

Approximately 14,000 people live in the Ingham region, covering north to Kennedy (north of Cardwell), south to Rollingstone, and west to Paluma. Read more about life in Ingham.

The hospital in Ingham has a busy emergency department with a wide variety of presentations. There are birthing services, surgical services and support from a multidisciplinary team to support the patient groups being looked after. Ingham Hospital has a close relationship with Townsville University Hospital, the tertiary centre of North Queensland, with patients transferring when required.
