Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service offers positions in Atherton.

Atherton

In the highlands of Tropical North Queensland, the Atherton Tablelands is a vibrant regional area. It’s around 80 km south west of Cairns, making it an easy 90 minute drive from the city and Cairns International Airport. Read more about living in Atherton.

Atherton Hospital offers a wide range of services, including a 24 hour emergency department. Other services include inpatient medical and surgical care, maternity, allied health and visiting specialist services. Atherton also provides medical outreach services to Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Mount Garnet, Ravenshoe, Croydon, Forsayth and Georgetown.

Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service

The Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service offers positions in:

  • Blackwater
  • Emerald
  • Yeppoon and Emu Park.

Blackwater

Blackwater is a coal mining community, 200 km west of Rockhampton and 75 km east of Emerald. The population is around 4,700 but with a high number of drive in drive out (DIDO) workers, it can get up to 12,000. There’s a significant First Nations population that lives and travels between Blackwater and Woorabinda. Read more about living in Blackwater.

The health services in Blackwater include a 24 hour emergency department with 6 treatment spaces and a triage room. There’s an inpatient ward, 6 residential aged care beds, medical imaging services, outpatient services, dental services, and additional consultation rooms.

Emerald

Emerald has a population of 14,000 people. It has a diverse economy, including agriculture, mining, and renewable energy. Emerald has a relatively young and mobile population, with families flocking to the area for employment opportunities. Read more about living in Emerald.

Emerald hospital is the major referral hospital for all the Central Highlands. They have a 24 hour emergency department, as well as general medicine and busy maternity services with over 300 births a year. They look after occupational injuries and traumas, as well as managing chronic illnesses.

Yeppoon and Emu Park

Yeppoon and Emu Park are on the Capricorn Coast in Central Queensland, around 30 km north east of Rockhampton. They offer a relaxed, family friendly lifestyle with strong community connections. There’s endless opportunities to embrace the sun, sea, sand. It’s a beautiful, untouched wonderland. Read more about living in Yeppoon.

The Capricorn Coast Hospital and Health Service is a rural generalist site. There’s an emergency department, 22 inpatients beds and a community health wing. There are social workers, mental health teams and allied health professionals on site, as well as visiting clinics for paediatric and obstetric care. Patients are transferred to Rockhampton Hospital for surgery, labour and birth.

Central West Hospital and Health Service

The Central West Hospital and Health Service offers positions in:

  • Barcaldine
  • Blackall
  • Longreach
  • Winton

Barcaldine

Barcaldine is a vibrant community with a population of 2,894. One hour east from Longreach, it has a rich pastoral history and easy access to the spectacular landscapes of Central West Queensland. Read more about living in Barcaldine.

Barcaldine health service has 12 acute beds and 6 residential aged care beds. They offer a range of emergency, inpatient, primary and allied health services.

Blackall

Blackall offers a relaxed outback lifestyle with a strong sense of community. With a population of 1,300, it’s on the banks of the Barcoo River, around 200 km south east of Longreach. Read more about living in Blackall.

Blackall hospital is a modern, architecturally designed facility with 10 beds and a 24 hour emergency department. It has inpatient services, medical imaging, telehealth and visiting specialists and allied health services.

Longreach

Longreach has a rich outback heritage, stunning open landscapes and unforgettable sunsets. With a population of 3,500, it’s the hub of Central West Queensland. It offers an exceptional outback lifestyle with iconic attractions. Read more about living in Longreach.

Longreach is a major referral hospital with 17 inpatient beds. It has a 24 hour emergency department, medical imaging, operating theatres and day surgery capability. They also offer maternity services for low risk pregnancies.

Winton

Winton is an iconic outback town, famous as the birthplace for waltzing Matilda and Australia’s dinosaur trail. It’s around 180 km north west of Longreach and home to 900 people. Read more about living in Winton.

Winton health service has a 12 bed acute facility offering a range of emergency, inpatient, primary and allied health services. It also has a 6 bed residential aged care facility.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service

The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service offers positions in:

  • Chinchilla
  • Dalby
  • Goondiwindi
  • Kingaroy and Murgon
  • Warwick and Killarney.

Dalby

Dalby is 200 km from Brisbane, at the crossroads to Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Roma, Mundubbera, and Goondiwindi. It has a population of around 13,000 in the town, and another 5,000 in the western rural district. It’s at the centre of rich coal and natural gas reserves which underpin the power generation industry for South East Queensland. Read more about life in Dalby.

Health services in Dalby include medical, surgical, maternity, paediatrics, accident and emergency and specialist outpatient services. There’s also pathology, medical imaging, pharmacy, allied health, mental health, palliative care, aged care, haemodialysis, and an infusion clinic. A residential aged care facility with 80 high care nursing beds is co-located with the hospital. There’s a busy non-specialist birthing service, with around 270 births a year. Visiting medical officers provide general surgery and gynaecological specialists, with planned procedures running 2 days a week and emergency caesarean 24 hours a day.

Goondiwindi

Goondiwindi is a regional border town in southern Queensland on the Macintyre River near the New South Wales border. It has a population of around 7,000 people and is known as a major agricultural centre, especially for cotton, grains, cattle, farming services, and transport. Read more about living in Goondiwindi.

Goondwindi Hospital has a 24 hour emergency department, as well as midwifery and maternity services. They have visiting specialists for things like surgery and paediatrics. There’s on site medical imaging as well as palliative care support. They work closely with the primary care medical centre and local community services.

Kingaroy and Murgon

Kingaroy and the South Burnett region is about 3 hours’ drive from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The population of Kingaroy is around 11,000 and just over 2,200 in Murgon. Read more about living in Kingaroy and Murgon.

The hospital in Kingaroy is a hub site for the other South Burnett hospitals including Nanango, Wondai, Cherbourg, and Murgon. It’s mainly staffed by rural generalists, with support from local and visiting specialists. There's level 3 emergency care, inpatients, renal dialysis, medical imaging, pathology and maternity care. The anaesthetics service is provided by GP anaesthetists 24 hours a day. There are visiting outpatient services for gynaecology, cardiology, psychiatry, paediatrics, general surgery, urology, and flying specialist service (FSS). There are also outreach services available.

Warwick and Killarney

Warwick is a rural town of approximately 12,000 people. It’s about 130 km or a scenic 2 hour drive from Brisbane. Warwick offers a country lifestyle with the conveniences of a bigger centre. Read more about living in Warwick.

The hospital in Warwick has an emergency department, 60 inpatient beds and low risk maternity and surgical services. They also have imaging, pathology and pharmacy services on site. They offer cancer treatments, dialysis, fracture, antenatal and women’s health clinics. There’s also a wide range of allied health services available.

The South West Hospital and Health Service offers positions in:

Cunnamulla

Cunnamulla offers an exceptional set of experiences for a rural generalist registrar, providing a rich variety of training in remote medicine, acute medicine, Aboriginal health, primary health care, population health, and retrieval medicine.

St George

St George is a thriving rural town, situated on the Balonne River and is a major agricultural region. It has a population of just over 3,000 people. Read more about living St George.

St George has acute medical and emergency services, outpatients, surgical, x-ray, pharmacy, wound management, telehealth, and palliative care. There are also maternity, antenatal, postnatal, and birthing services. There’s a wide range of primary and community care (PCC) services covering both St George and the surrounding areas.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service

The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service offers positions in Maleny.

Maleny

Maleny is a unique rural community located high above the Sunshine Coast with beautiful views of the Glasshouse Mountains. Maleny has a population of approximately 4,000 people and is about 100 km north of Brisbane. Read more about living in Maleny.

The hospital in Maleny is led by rural GPs and rural generalists with support from visiting specialists. Services include emergency, medical, subacute, palliative care and outpatients.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service

The Townsville Hospital and Health Service offers positions in:

  • Ayr
  • Charters Towers
  • Ingham.

Ayr

Ayr is a regional town in North Queensland, around 88 km south east of Townsville. It has a population of 8,600 people and is a commercial, health and education hub for the surrounding agricultural district, particularly the sugar industry. Read more about living in Ayr.

Ayr Health Service is a 28 bed facility that looks after the communities of Ayr, Home Hill and the wider Burdekin Shire. They offer emergency, general medical, surgical and obstetric services.

Charters Towers

Charters Towers is located 134km west of Townsville. It’s the gateway to the western corridor of Queensland and has a large farming community in its surrounding areas. Read more about living in Charters Towers.

Health services in Charters Towers include accident and emergency care, general in-patient medical, surgical, obstetric, and paediatric services. Although the hospital isn’t a birthing facility, pregnancy care closer to home is a key part of the hospital team. Allied health support includes social work, radiography, oral health, pharmacy and physiotherapy, and indigenous health workers all on site at the hospital.

Ingham

Approximately 14,000 people live in the Ingham region, covering north to Kennedy (north of Cardwell), south to Rollingstone, and west to Paluma. Read more about living in Ingham.

The hospital in Ingham has a busy emergency department with a wide variety of presentations. There are birthing services, surgical services and support from a multidisciplinary team to support patient care. Ingham Hospital has a close relationship with Townsville University Hospital, the tertiary centre of North Queensland, with patients transferring when needed.

West Moreton Hospital and Health Service

The West Moreton Hospital and Health Service (HHS) offers positions in:

Boonah and Kalbar

Boonah and Kalbar are charming rural townships in the Scenic Rim region of South East Queensland, surrounded by World Heritage-listed landscapes and natural beauty, offering a relaxed country lifestyle. Read more about living in Boonah and Kalbar.

Boonah Hospital is a 22 bed rural hospital. They have a 24 hour emergency department, as well as inpatient care, rehabilitation, allied health and palliative care services. There is on site medical imaging and visiting specialist clinics. They work closely with community service and offer virtual care using telehealth.

Gatton

Gatton is the main town in the Lockyer Valley Region, with a population of around 8,500.  It has a relaxed country lifestyle with everything you need nearby, including shopping, cafes and community events. With a warm subtropical climate and a welcoming atmosphere, it has a great balance between rural living and access to the city. Read more about living in Gatton.

Gatton Hospital has a 24 hour emergency department as well as inpatient and outpatient services. There’s on site palliative care, medical imaging and allied health services. There are close links with local GPs and community services.

You’ll do your rotation in:

  • The Lockyer Doctors Gatton
  • Laidley or Gatton Hospital.

Laidley

Laidley is a historic town in the Lockyer Valley, just an hours drive from Brisbane. Surrounded by lush farmlands, lakes, creeks and lagoons, it has a lot to offer.

Laidley Hospital is a 12 bed rural hospital. They offer a range of services, including a 24 hour emergency department, palliative care and rehabilitation services. They also offer outreach services, including allied health, and have visiting specialists.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service offers positions in Biggenden.

Biggenden

Biggenden is a rural town of around 800 people in Queensland’s North Burnett region. It’s 339 km north west of Brisbane and just over an hours drive inland from Bundaberg. The town is at the base of Mount Walsh National Park and has lots of bushwalks, swimming holes and picnic sports nearby. Read more about living in Biggenden.

Biggenden health services offer primary care, emergency, inpatient and aged care. Registrars are supported by experienced supervisors to manage a diverse case mix, including emergency patients that need to be stabilised for transfer to other facilities.
