New opportunities for paramedics
Paramedics traditionally work in ambulance services but at Queensland Health we’re building on what it means to be a paramedic.
In an Australian first, experienced paramedics can now be employed by, and work directly in our remote hospital facilities. This new role gives paramedics more opportunities to use their skills in healthcare.
Build on your role as a paramedic
Remote hospital paramedics are experienced paramedics who work in our hospitals and health services.
You’ll work with doctors, nurses and other health professionals to care for patients in remote communities across Queensland. This includes providing:
- everyday care and treatment (primary care)
- urgent care for illness or injury (acute care)
- emergency care
- community healthcare.
How your role is unique
You’ll be employed directly by our health services and work in our facilities.
Your work will include:
- assessing patients for illness or injury
- providing treatment or emergency care, including medicine
- supporting other health professionals
- educating your community about health and wellbeing.
You’ll get comprehensive training, mentoring and support to help you start work and expand your skills. We’ll explain the scope of your role, what you’ll be doing and supervisor arrangements.

Who can apply
To apply, you must:
- have at least 3 years recent experience as a qualified paramedic in direct patient care
- be registered with the Paramedicine Board of Australia
- be vaccinated against vaccine preventable diseases.
You may also need certain vehicle licenses, depending on your role.

Health services in these regions have facilities classed as remote or very remote under the Australian Government Modified Monash Model.
You can work in a range of remote settings including:
- hospitals
- primary health centres
- general practices
- residential aged care
- community healthcare.
