Join the GP registrar single employer model (SEM) pilot
We're trialling a new way of employing GP trainees in rural Queensland.
With the single employer model (SEM), you'll have the same employer and stay in the same rural town for all your GP training placements. You'll move between the hospital and primary health care facilities for your rotations.
That means you'll:
- build continuous service so you can access extra employee benefits, like parental leave
- have more stability by staying in one place
- build local connections in the community.
The single employer model is part of a national trial. The trial will continue until 31 December 2028.
How it works
Queensland Health and the local hospital and health service will be your employer throughout your training. They'll look after your pay, tax, leave, superannuation, premiums, allowances and benefits, including during your primary care placements.
All the facilities you work at will be accredited by your GP training college, so your experience will go towards gaining your fellowship.
You can join the SEM pilot at any point during your GP training. It's most common for trainees to have a 1 or 2 year contract, but it's possible to get a contract for up to 6 years.
If you're interested in applying for the SEM pilot, you'll need to first speak with your college training coordinator. They'll help make sure your preferred placements meet your GP training requirements.
You can leave the program at any point if you want to do a placement that's not part of the SEM. If you leave the program your employment with Queensland Health might be affected. It won't affect your training.
Placements
Once you’re part of the program, you’ll apply for your placements through the usual college placement process.
Placement offers will depend on:
- the number of places available
- supervisor capacity
- ability to meet your training requirements.
