We are responsible for and oversee the Queensland Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training Pathway (the program). The program recruits and selects registrars and assists with allocating them to an accredited training site. The program emphasises state-wide consistency and quality, in association with trainee equity, flexibility and choice.

The program is based on The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training curriculum and the aim is to both:

  • improve the quality of training in geriatric medicine
  • promote high quality and diverse training opportunities that exist across the state.

The program is a 3-year (2 year core training) training program. Participants are provided support and may need to:

  • undertake a research project
  • rotate between more than one hospital or department to complete part of their training.

Queensland has an appointed Statewide Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training Director  and Medical Education Officer who are dedicated to advanced training in geriatric medicine.

Eligibility

To apply you need to be either a registrar currently employed by us as an advanced trainee in geriatric medicine or a new applicant.

If you’re a new applicant, you need to have:

  • a general or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • a registration with RACP
  • either completed the FRACP clinical examination or sitting the exam in 2025
  • have an interest in geriatric medicine.

Applying

You can apply to the geriatric medicine training program when you apply for the RMO campaign. When you do, make sure you complete the geriatric medicine training program section of the application.

To be eligible for a position you need to provide details for 2 referees and your referees will have to upload reports no later than the 5 July 2026. If they don’t, you won’t be eligible for a position. If the referees have not uploaded the reports, your application will be deemed incomplete and will not be processed to the Qld Geriatric Medicine Advisory Panel for consideration.

Interview and selection

The Queensland Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training Advisory Panel will review applications and contact short listed applicants with an interview time and date.

Applicants who are in the process of completing their FRACP examination will have their interviews confirmed following the outcome of the results of the examination.

Successful applicants will be selected and appointed by individual site directors, taking into account each trainee's training requirements, facility preferences and clinical workforce demands.
