U-me Koola - On the job training
The U-me Koola program provides on the job training and qualifications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are interested in becoming an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers
Our Health Workers provide clinical and primary health care in hospitals and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community health clinics.
You’ll work with patients, visitors and clients and your role may include:
- education and promotional programs or activities
- patient health screening and assessments
- basic first aid
- preventative health interventions
- community development programs.
Some Health Workers choose to specialise in health areas such as optical, hearing, women’s health or infant care.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners
Our Health Practitioners play a vital role in supporting the health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and communities.
You’ll work in primary and secondary health care settings, providing clinical health and primary health care interventions.
You can practice under direct or indirect supervision, or practice autonomously in teams with other health professionals. You may also work with policy makers, educators, and researchers.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners must be registered with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Board of Australia (ATSIHPBA).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Officers
Our Hospital Liaison Officers help clients connect with services that support their social and emotional wellbeing. They advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in primary and secondary health care settings.
