Breast imaging technologist

As a breast imaging technologist you’ll work as part of a specialised multidisciplinary team. BreastScreen Queensland radiographers, mammographers, radiographer/sonographers and sonographers provide:

• screening mammograms at BreastScreen Queensland clinics, community sites and mobile vans in regional, rural and remote areas
• diagnostic mammography and ultrasounds for women recalled from their screening mammogram
• biopsy procedures.

Radiographers and mammographers may be able to do extra training to become clinical tutors or perform breast ultrasounds.

Qualification and registration requirements

Radiographers

To work as a breast imaging radiographer in Queensland you must:

• have a degree or equivalent in diagnostic radiography or medical imaging
• hold a current Queensland Radiation User Licence
• current registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia
• have completed or be willing to work towards the Certificate of Mammographic Practice (CMP) with the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT).

Mammographers

To work as a mammographer in Queensland you must:

• have a Graduate Diploma in Mammography (GDM)
• have a Queensland Radiation User Licence.

Radiographer/sonographers

To work as a radiographer/sonographer you must:

• have a degree or equivalent in diagnostic radiography or medical imaging
• have a degree or equivalent in medical ultrasound or graduate certificate in breast ultrasound
• hold a current Queensland Radiation User Licence
• current registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia and the Australian Sonographer Registration Authority
• have completed or be willing to work towards the Certificate of Mammographic Practice (CMP) with the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT).

Sonographers

To work as a breast imaging sonographer in BreastScreen Queensland you must :

• have a degree or equivalent in medical ultrasound or graduate certificate in breast ultrasound
• current registration with the Australian Sonographer Registration Authority.

Clinical tutors

You can train to be a BreastScreen Queensland clinical tutor if you:

• have been working for BreastScreen Queensland for at least 3 years
• hold a current Certificate of Mammographic Practice (CMP) with the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT)
• complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
