Your role as a health promotion officer

As a health promotion officer, you’ll talk to people and groups across Queensland and help them improve their health and wellbeing.

This includes:

  • promoting healthy lifestyles, choices and changes
  • running campaigns, events and workshops
  • working with communities to understand their health needs and support healthy choices.

We have full time, part time and casual roles.

How a health promotion officer is different to a public health officer

Health promotion officers work with local communities and organisations to help people understand their health needs. A public health officer works on programs and policies that improve the health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders.

What your day might look like

You’ll start the day checking in with your team and planning a range of projects that promote health and wellbeing.

You’ll also work with:

  • hospitals and health centres
  • schools and universities
  • community groups
  • local council or sporting events.

You’ll help people learn how their health might be affected across a range of areas, such as:

  • mental and emotional health
  • alcohol, drugs, smoking and vaping
  • immunisation
  • organ donation
  • long term (chronic) conditions
  • women’s health and pregnancy
  • regular health checks and screening
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

A big part of your job is creating content and materials that raise awareness and help people improve their health. You’ll design and publish social media posts, web pages, posters and brochures that connect people with key health messages.

You’ll also work with people in rural and remote areas to help them solve local health and wellbeing issues.
