Join our 2 year clinical coding accelerated graduate training program and get training and support while you work. We’ll help you make the transition from education to employment.

You’ll get valuable on the job experience while you put what you’ve learned into practice.

Our program is for people who have recently completed a:

  • Diploma of Clinical Coding
  • Bachelor of Health Information Management (HIM).

You’ll get all the practical skills you need for a career in clinical coding.

How it works

While you’re on the program you’ll:

  • work full time at your hospital and health service (HHS)
  • follow a training pathway alongside your work for the first 12 months.

Training

The first year of the program you’ll be training while you work.

Your training will cover and test all the competencies in the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) Clinical Coding Practice Framework. It starts at foundation level and then progresses you through intermediate and onto advanced skills.

It includes:

  • simulated coding
  • supported live coding
  • mentor sessions
  • peer review sessions
  • presentations
  • live audits and assessments
  • written assessments.

You’ll be doing a mix of online and in person training. In person training will be 3 times a year at the start of each training phase. You’ll need to travel to Brisbane for the training. Your HHS will cover the cost of travel and accommodation if you need it.

You’ll have a clinical coding educator to support you through the course who will:

  • give you an induction and help you get settled into the program
  • support you through your training
  • be your point of contact for any educational issues
  • give you regular feedback
  • keep your line manager and HHS up to date on your progress.

Experience

For the 2 years you’re on the program you’ll be supported while you work. Your HHS employer will help you to:

  • put the skills you’ve learned into practice
  • ease the transition from study into employment.

When you complete each module of training, your workplace supervisor will give you work that builds on the skills you’ve just learned. By the end of your 12 months of supported training you’ll have all the skills you need.

For the second 12 months you’ll continue to work in your HHS as part of their regular coding workforce. You’ll keep building real life experience on the job for the rest of the program.

Eligibility

You can apply if you:

  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or an Australian permanent resident
  • have completed a diploma in clinical coding or a degree in health information management within the last 18 months
  • can work full time at your HHS throughout the program
  • can travel to Brisbane for a week, 3 times a year.

How to apply

To apply for the program you’ll need to submit a CV and cover letter through the job listing on smartjobs.

We’ll asses your application based on:

  • your CV and cover letter
  • a joint interview with the program educator and the HHS you’ve applied to
  • a coding competency test.

We’ll also need to see:

  • proof of your qualifications
  • proof of your right to work in Australia
  • references.

If your application is successful, the HHS will employ you in a full time role and we’ll enrol you on the program.
